The NFL operates several other drafts in addition to the NFL Draft. The league holds a supplemental draft annually. Clubs submit emails to the league stating the player they wish to select and the round they will do so, and the team with the highest bid wins the rights to that player. The exact order is determined by a lottery held before the draft, and a successful bid for a player will result in the team forfeiting the rights to their pick in the equivalent round of the next NFL Draft.[102] Players are only eligible for the supplemental draft after being granted a petition for special eligibility.[103] The league holds expansion drafts, the most recent happening in xxxx when the Houston Texans began play as an expansion team.[104] Other drafts held by the league include an allocation draft in xxxx to allocate players from several teams that played in the dissolved All-America Football Conference[105] and a Supplemental Draft in xxxx to give NFL teams the rights to players who had been eligible for the main draft but had not been drafted because they had signed contracts with the United States Football League or Canadian Football League.[106]Free agents in the National Football League are divided into restricted free agents, who have three accrued seasons and whose current contract has expired, and unrestricted free agents, who have four or more accrued seasons and whose contract has expired. An accrued season is defined as "six or more regular-season games on a club's active/inactive, reserved/injured or reserve/physically unable to perform lists".[108] Restricted free agents are allowed to negotiate with other clubs besides their former club, but the former club has the right to match any offer. If they choose not to, they are compensated with draft picks. Unrestricted free agents are free to sign with any club, and no compensation is owed if they sign with a different club.[108]Thanksgiving Day football games in the United States are nearly as old as the game itself. The first Thanksgiving Day football game took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Thanksgiving Day of xxxx, less than two weeks after Rutgers defeated Princeton in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in what is widely considered to have been the first American Football game. On November 17, xxxx, the Evening Telegraph newspaper of Philadelphia published the following announcement: "Foot Ball: A foot-ball match between twenty-two players of the Young America Cricket Club and the Germantown Cricket Club will take place on Thanksgiving Day at 12 1/2 o'clock, on the grounds of the Germantown Club." [1] The proximity of Philadelphia to both Rutgers and Princeton invites speculation that this game may have been played under similar rules and perhaps involved some of the same participants, or at least people familiar with the game played at Rutgers, and a second match at Princeton, earlier that month. In xxxx, the game was played between City and Poly, then located on Courtland Street just a short distance from City. This led to one of the longest continuous public high school American football rivalry in the nation. In the early xxxxs the game was played on Thanksgiving Day and when Memorial Stadium was built in xxxx the game was played there until the stadium was demolished in xxxx. The games played at Memorial stadium during the xxxxs drew an average of 25,000 fans. In xxxx, 27,500 fans saw quarterback Kurt Schmoke and team captain Curt Anderson lead City to a 52?6 win over Poly. The Thanksgiving tradition ended in xxxx when both City and Poly joined the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association which held its playoffs during the Thanksgiving week, requiring both schools to move their rivalry to a date three weeks earlier. The game is now played at M&T Bank Stadium, in downtown Baltimore the first week of November. Anderson (City) and Baltimore attorney Warren Brown (Poly) have kept the Turkey Day tradition alive between the two schools by sponsoring a flag football game at 9 am every Thanksgiving morning at Baltimore's Herring Run Park. For the past 30 years any former Poly student, football player or not, faces off against a team made up of former City students. Brown and Anderson no longer play, but their sons do.The "Turkey Day Game" in Missouri between the Kirkwood High School Pioneers and the Webster Groves High School Statesmen celebrated its 100th anniversary in xxxx. Newly found evidence shows that xxxx also celebrated the 100th known football game since xxxx between the two schools (whether or not there were games played during the xxxx, xxxx, and xxxx seasons still remains unknown) and the 77th game played on Thanksgiving Day between the varsity teams of the two schools. In addition to the unknown seasons of xxxx, xxxx, and xxxx, there was no game in xxxx because Kirkwood did not have a team; there were four cancellations of the game in xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx; two games held in xxxx; three games held in xxxx; two games held in xxxx; two games held in xxxx; seven years in which only the junior varsity squads played on Thanksgiving Day due to a playoff schedule conflict (see below) in xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx and xxxx; fourteen games postponed or not scheduled on Thanksgiving Day since xxxx?xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, and xxxx. The game was suspended for four years ? xxxx, xxxx, xxxx, and xxxx ? after a melee occurred on the field in xxxx that involved spectators from the stands. A referee called back all three of Kirkwood's touchdowns due to penalties, allowing Webster Groves to win the game 7?0. The win gave Webster Groves its eighth consecutive win and a 14?7?2 lead in the varsity series since xxxx. The game resumed in xxxx and was played continuously on Thanksgiving Day until xxxx. The game site alternates between Moss Field (Webster Groves) on even years and Lyons Field (Kirkwood) on odd years. In the event that either Kirkwood or Webster Groves advances to the Show-Me Bowl state championship game, the non-varsity members of the junior varsity and freshman squads play instead as part of the xxxx Turkey Day Agreement. The agreement has so far been utilized in xxxx, xxxx, and xxxx.[8]The Kirkwood and Webster Groves varsity teams have not met in the Turkey Day Game since xxxx. This is because every year since xxxx, at least one of the two teams has advanced to the Show-Me Bowl, thus invoking the Agreement and relegating the contest to a junior varsity match.[12] In xxxx there was an unusual situation: the Kirkwood and Webster Groves varsity teams met in the Class 5 state semifinals the weekend before Thanksgiving, assuring one of them would advance to the Show-Me Bowl; Webster Groves won the game, 28?0. In addition to the pre-Thanksgiving matchup, the junior varsity teams played on Thanksgiving itself.[13] In xxxx and xxxx, the two teams faced each other in the playoffs earlier in November, which is more common given the two schools' proximity.[14] The four-year streak will be broken in xxxx, as Webster Groves lost in the state semifinals that year, although the team has not yet indicated if the varsity squads will play the Turkey Day Game since the two teams had already played each other three weeks prior.Since xxxx, a 400-pound bell from a retired locomotive, donated by the Frisco Railroad Company, has been used as the trophy for the Turkey Day Game. The winner of the game takes possession of the Frisco Bell until the next game. The Bell was first awarded to Kirkwood, despite the game ending in a tie, because Webster Groves had lost the previous year's game. Since xxxx, the loser has received the Little Brown Jug, which originally had painted the years and scores of the game on its back, but now has been replaced with the Centennial Jug, with the history of the coaches painted on it.[15]The term Turkey Day in both Kirkwood and Webster has grown to encompass not only the football game itself, but the festivities in the week prior to Thanksgiving Day. Both schools participate in extensive activities surrounding Turkey Day during Thanksgiving week. The Friendship Dance is held every year at the high school not hosting that year's game, as a gesture of friendship between the schools. Each school names a Friendship Court and selects a Friendship Queen and King from the court. In addition, each grade level at both schools decorate a hallway in a unique theme, and are then judged. At both schools, the activities culminate in respective pep rallies both on the last day of school of that week (Tuesday) and the Wednesday night before the game. At both Kirkwood and Webster, there is a bonfire after the Wednesday night pep rally.[16] Drawing thousands of people every year, the game itself has grown in popularity to the likes of the local news and cable broadcasts of the game. As well as being recognized by ESPN, the game has garnered a multi-page exclusive article in Sports Illustrated. The Xavier/Fordham Prep annual "Turkey Bowl" is one of the oldest high school football rivalries in New York history. Their very first game against one another took place in the late xxxxs when the game was called due to darkness and ended in a tie. Xavier and Fordham Prep used to play many of their famed Thanksgiving Day "Turkey Bowl" Games at Manhattan's Polo Grounds until it was demolished following the construction of Shea Stadium in the borough of Queens. For many years, the game was played in Downing Stadium (now Icahn Stadium) on Randall's Island or on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx. Most recently, in years Fordham has the home-field advantage, the game is played at Jack Coffey Field on the campus of Fordham University. When Xavier has the advantage, the game is played at the Aviator Sports and Events Center on the grounds of Floyd Bennett Field, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn.Football was introduced to North America in Canada by the British Army garrison in Montreal, which played a series of games with McGill University.[1] In xxxx, USA's Harvard University hosted Canada's McGill University to play the new game derived from Rugby football in a home and home series. When the Canadians arrived several days early, in order to take advantage of the trip to see Boston and the surrounding areas, they held daily practices. During this time the Americans were surprised to see the Canadians kick, chase, and then run with the ball. Picking up and running with the ball violated a basic rule of the American game of the day; when the US captain (Henry Grant) pointed this out to the captain of the Canadian team (David Roger) the reply was simple: Running with the ball is a core part of the Canadian game. When the American asked which game the Canadians played, David replied "Rugby". After some negotiation it was decided to play a game with half and half Canadian/US rules. Thus many of the similarities and differences between the Canadian and American games indeed came out of this original home and home series where each home team set the rules. For instance, Harvard, because of a lack of campus space, did not have a full-sized rugby pitch. Their pitch was only 100 yards (91 m) long by 50 yards (46 m) wide with undersized endzones (slightly less than the 53?-yard width of the current regulation size for American Football). Because of the reduced field, the Harvard team opted for 11 players per side, four fewer than the regulation 15 of Rugby Union. To generate more offense, Harvard also increased the number of downs from 3, as set by McGill, to 4. Furthermore, the Harvard players so enjoyed running with the ball that this rule was wholly adopted into all Harvard play following the two games with McGill. While the American team bested the Canadian (3-0 and a following tie game), both countries' flavours of football were forever changed and linked to one another. Both the Canadian and American games still have some things in common with the two varieties of rugby, especially rugby league, and because of the similarities, the National Football League (NFL) has established a formal relationship with the Canadian Football League (CFL).Many, perhaps most, of the rules differences have arisen because of rules changes in American football in the early twentieth century which have not been copied by Canadian football. The major Canadian codes never abolished the onside scrimmage kick (see Kicker advancing the ball below) or restricted backfield motion, while the American college football (from whose code all American codes derive) did. Canadian football was later in adopting the hand snap and the forward pass, although one would not suspect the latter from play today. Additionally, Canadian football was slower in removing restrictions on blocking, but caught up by the xxxxs so that no significant differences remain today. Similarly, differences in scoring (the Canadian game valuing touchdowns less) opened up from the late 19th century but were erased by the xxxxs. An area in which American football has been more conservative is the retention of the fair catch (see below). In some regions along the Canada-USA border, especially western areas, some high schools from opposite sides of the border will regularly play games against one another (typically one or two per team per season). By agreement between the governing bodies involved, the field of the home team is considered a legal field, although it is a different size from one school's normal field. In all but a few cases, the rules of the home team are followed throughout the game. Many CFL players are Americans who grew up playing American football and cannot find a place in the NFL, or who prefer to play in the CFL; strict import quotas restrict the number of non-Canadian players. Furthermore, the classifications of import (non-Canadian) and non-import (Canadian) are highly restrictive and require a player to have been in Canada since childhood to qualify as a non-import (i.e. a player cannot simply become a Canadian citizen and become a non-import, nor can he arrive in Canada during high school or college; both scenarios would still have the player in question classified as an import and counted against the team's maximum). For individuals who played both American and Canadian football professionally, their career statistic totals are considered to be their combined totals from their careers in both the CFL and NFL. Warren Moon, for example, was the all-time professional football leader in passing yards after an illustrious career in both leagues. He was surpassed in xxxx by Damon Allen who in turn was surpassed by Anthony Calvillo in xxxx, both of whose careers were exclusively in the CFL.The official playing field in Canadian football is larger than the American, and similar to American fields prior to xxxx. The Canadian field of play is 110 yards long by 65 yards wide (101 m by 59 m), rather than 100 yards long by 53? yards wide (91 m by 49 m) as in American football. The end zones in Canadian football are 10 yards deeper than American football end zones as the CFL uses 20 yard (18 m) deep end zones. Occasionally, however, the Canadian field will have its end zone truncated at the corners so that the field fits in the infield of a running track. One such example is the Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, home of the Montreal Alouettes. The goalposts for kicking are placed at the goal line in Canadian football and the end line in the American game. In Canadian rules, the distance between the sideline and hash marks is 24 yards (22 m); in American amateur rules, at the high school level, the distance is 17 yards, 2 feet, 4 inches (16m), virtually sectioning the field into three equal columns. The hash marks are closer together at the American college level, where they are 20 yards (18.29 m) from the sideline, and in the NFL, where they are 23 yards, 1 ft, 9 in (22 m) from the sideline and the distance between them is the same as that between the goalposts.Because of the larger field, many American football venues are generally unfit for the Canadian game. While there are several American stadiums which could accommodate the extra 17½ feet (nearly 6 yards / 5.3m) per side in width (multi-purpose stadiums, baseball parks converted for football, and some soccer-specific stadiums are particularly good fits), most American stadiums would lose between fifteen and eighteen rows of seating in each endzone because the field is 15 yards (13.7 m) longer on each end. In many smaller venues, this would be the entire endzone section, losing seating for at least 3,000 spectators. During the CFL's failed expansion to American cities, Canadian football was either played on converted baseball grounds, or in some cases, on a field designed for American football (for instance, the Memphis Mad Dogs and the Birmingham Barracudas of the CFL, playing in the Liberty Bowl and at Legion Field, respectively, played the Canadian game on American fields because of the inability of the stadiums to adapt to the larger field). The Alamodome, originally built as a multi-purpose dome, proved to best accommodate both Canadian football (the CFL's San Antonio Texans) and American football (Alamo Bowl, Dallas Cowboys training camp, the New Orleans Saints after Hurricane Katrina, the NFLPA Game, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and the UTSA Roadrunners), although Canadian football is no longer played there. Similarly, Hornet Stadium fairly easily adapted to both the Canadian and American game, as it was built with a running track in which the Canadian field fits with only some cuts to the corners. Hornet Stadium hosts California State University, Sacramento (more often known as Sacramento State), hosted the Sacramento Surge and Sacramento Mountain Lions in American football and hosted the Sacramento Gold Miners in Canadian football.
